48,000 child exploitation pics land hermit in jail

A MAN who lived a "hermit-like existence" was sentenced to two and a half years' prison for possessing more than 48,000 child exploitation images and videos.

John William Wyatt pled guilty in Kingaroy District Court on Thursday to one count of possessing child exploitation material.

Wyatt, 33, came to the attention of Task Force Argos, the police division that investigates online child porn, and police issued a search warrant on his home.

The court heard police found more than 48,000 images and movies of child exploitation on an external hard drive in his home.

Prosecutor Belinda Merrin said although the majority of the material was of the least serious category, 141 images were in the most serious category.

"There are also images of children as young as one," Ms Merrin said.

Defence barrister Kylie Hillard said her client had a number of psychological difficulties.

"My client (according to his psychological report) has a depressive disorder and some learning difficulties," Ms Hillard said.

"He has a lower than average IQ and requires psychotropic or physiological intervention for his depression and anxiety."

She said Wyatt was coping with the recent death of his mother and caring for his elderly father at the time of the offence.

Judge Katherine McGinness said that despite Wyatt's difficulties, he needed to recognise the full impact of his crime.

"I accept that you are genuinely remorseful," Judge McGinness said.

"This is not a victimless crime; there are young children all over the world being subject to these horrible things in order to produce this child exploitation material."

He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, suspended after six months.
