Fans celebrate 50 years of LBD

YESTERDAY marked the 50th anniversary of the release of the iconic film, Breakfast at Tiffany's - the film that epitomised an unsurpassed era of style: the little black dress (the LBD), sunglasses and long cigarette holders.

Lismore dress shop owner Roslyn White has been specialising in vintage fashion in the Star Court Arcade for six years and attributes much of her range to that era, and of course, Audrey Hepburn herself.

"She was the just most stylish woman ever," Ms White said.

"As a person, anything she touched, clothing, fashion, movies, was a hard act to follow - she had incredible taste. She arrived in an era when style really was a beautiful thing."

Celebrations were in full swing across the movie-loving world yesterday, but no more so than in New York, where the film was set, with Audrey Hepburn look-a-likes and movie aficionados clambering for places at parties across the Upper East Side.

"The sixties was such an explosion of style - the era of that timeless fitted style where clothes flattered women and made them feel sexy and gorgeous," Ms White said.

"It was the quality too ... you can see a lot of these dresses here are over 50 years old. Dressmakers were so skilled at what they did then.

Across the Star Court walkway, dressmaker Sharon Pole from Little Polli and the Blackbird concurred.

"I draw on that era as a designer," she said. "It's the simplicity and the elegance - the beautiful combinations of fabrics and the silhouettes."
