$5m for health training facilities

MORE than $5 million in clinic education and training infrastructure has been earmarked for the Northern Rivers, according to Page MP Janelle Saffin.

The funding, which was announced today at Lismore, will be split between Ballina, Lismore and Grafton, she said.

“I am particularly pleased that $4,148,625 will go towards constructing a new two-storey multi-disciplinary clinical teaching facility on-site at Ballina District Hospital,” Ms Saffin said.

“The ground floor will have consultation rooms and teaching/meeting rooms, and there will be 20 rooms for student accommodation upstairs. Eight of these rooms will be for dental students attending the student learning facility at Ballina Dental Clinic.”

The Northern Rivers University Centre for Rural Health will receive $1,035,000 to establish a clinical training simulation facility by refurbishing the old Blood Bank building across the road from Lismore Base Hospital.

“And a grant of $442,200 will be used to refurbish existing student accommodation at Grafton Base Hospital to increase the number of beds by 10,” Ms Saffin said.
