Clinton warns MH17 attackers that response will be 'swift'

WORLD leaders are poised to take action once those who are responsible for blasting a Malaysia Airlines plane out of the sky over Ukraine are identified.

Leaders from across the world were united in condemning the attack and promised those responsible will be brought to justice.

The attack on Malaysia Airlines MH17 killed 298 people who hailed from more than nine counties, including Australia.

Twenty-seven Australians were killed in the attack - the worst aviation disaster in history involving Australian citizens.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned there would be a swift international response once those who are responsible are identified.

She said growing evidence pointed to pro-Russian insurgents being responsible.

"There is great concern that a civilian plane has been shot down, but what is of bigger concern is what role Russia may have played in this tragedy," she said.

"If there is evidence Russia is involved then the world should put Russian president Vladimir Putin on notice."

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said any investigation needed to be measured and accurate.

"There is clearly a need for a full, transparent and international investigation," he said.

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday (Saturday Australian time) with several counties, including Britain and Australia, calling for a full, thorough and independent international investigation into what caused the plane to come down.
