Youth gang bash man with prosthetic leg, four sentenced

IN the wee hours of the morning a group of youths looking for trouble found it.

An unsuspecting man with a prosthetic leg was walking to meet his ride home after a few drinks at the Raffles Hotel in Rockhampton when he was set upon.

Five offenders kicked and punched him until he fell to the ground and his leg came off.

He was then left lying in the middle of the road.

Four of the gang were sentenced in the Rockhampton District Court on Monday.

Claudette Charmaine Freeman, 19, and Matilda Joyce Monica Twaddle, 20, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm in company.

Two juveniles, aged 15 and 16, also pleaded guilty to robbery in company with personal violence.

Another teen pleaded not guilty and the matter went to trial last week. He was found guilty.

The court heard the offence occurred about 2.30am one night in October last year.

The victim's girlfriend told police she spotted the group as she drove to meet him on Glenmore Rd.

She said she had to drive past her partner to perform a u-turn so she tried to warn him by yelling out, but he didn't hear.

The man's mobile phone was taken during the attack.

Police attended the area and reprimanded a number of the offenders in nearby streets.

Freeman was sentenced to nine months jail with immediate parole, while Twaddle received 10 months jail with immediate parole.

The 15-year-old offender was sentenced to eight months probation and 100 hours of community service.

The 16-year-old was sentenced to nine months detention suspended immediately, 18 months probation and 60 hours community service.

The other juvenile is awaiting sentence.
