Research says private health cover could be much cheaper

CONSUMERS with private health insurance could save as much as $1400 on their premiums by being a bit choosier, a Choice review of health cover has found.

The review, released on Tuesday, showed that choosing the right "Top Hospital cover", and how much excess they chose - between nothing and $100 a year.

It comes after premiums jumped 6.2% in April this year and as a Senate committee examines the out-of-pocket health costs Australians face every day.

Consumer group Choice's head of media Tom Godfrey said while people might be tempted to downgrade their cover when premiums rose, it was better to look for the best possible cover.

Our review has found that if you take the time to compare the value between policies, you can make real savings without cutting back on the cover you need," he said.

"Understanding which type of cover is right for you and your family's circumstances, you could end up better off."
