Man who threatened group with a bayonet found by police

POLICE swarmed a busy Sydney shopping centre today in search of a bayonet-wielding man who allegedly threatened a group of people.

The 37-year-old man allegedly walked up to three young men in Oxford St, and held up a 60cm bayonet late Thursday.

He allegedly chased them into the Bondi Junction Westfield before they were able to escape.

Dozens of police were called in and the man was eventually found and arrested.

At the Waverley police station, the man allegedly threatened police and damaged several items in the cell area.

A later search of his home allegedly uncovered a small amount of drugs.

The man was charged with 13 offences including being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, common assault, possessing a prohibited weapon, malicious damage, intimidating police, assaulting police and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail.
