Popes John XXIII and Pope John Paul II canonised together

THE world is now a slightly more saintly place.

Overnight, Popes John XXIII and John Paul II were canonised in a Vatican ceremony that was reportedly the first of its kind since the Middle Ages.

Pope Francis declared the sainthood of the two, John Paul who died nine years ago and John XXIII who died in 1963.

Francis's papal predecessor Benedict XVI also attended - he was the first pontiff in 600 years to leave the role, abdicating last year for health reasons.

Up to 800,000 were estimated to have attend the ceremony.
