Sex workers held at gunpoint during armed robbery

SEX workers were threatened at gunpoint and a petrol station attendant stabbed during a series of violent armed robberies across Sydney at the weekend.

A brothel on King St in the CBD was held up by three thieves in the early hours of Monday morning.

The armed men stole a woman's handbag and fled with cash.

Earlier in the evening, bar staff were threatened with a gun and knife at a Mascot hotel about 11pm.

Cash was stolen but no one was harmed.

Police believe the robberies may be linked.

They are hunting a man with a thin build who was last seen wearing a gold and brown baseball cap, beige pants and a blue jumper.

His two friends had their faces covered and were both wearing blue.

About the same time, a 29-year-old man was slashed in the hand with a knife when a thief jumped the counter at a Villawood petrol station and took off with the till.

A meat cleaver was used in a street robbery at Newtown.

A 40-year-old man was walking down the street on Sunday morning when an armed man held up a cleaver and demanded cash.

The victim threw his wallet on the ground and called police.

The armed man was described as being of Asian appearance, about 18-21 years of age, 170cm tall, with a thin build and a thin dark moustache.

Out west, a young woman was walking home from Auburn train station when a man threatened her with a plank of wood.

The 24-year-old gave up her mobile phone and backpack before the armed man and his friend fled.

Investigations into the four robberies are continuing.
