Standout start for rugbys Redmen

ON SUNDAY March 21 the Grafton Redmen under-15s and 16s competed in the Casino Bulls 10-a-side competition.

The 16s, coached by Scott and Robert Brown, have shown they will be serious contenders in the Far North Coast Junior Rugby competition with impressive performances.

The squad unfortunately did not make the finals, but defeated the eventual grand final winners Casino in a very entertaining qualifying match. The 16s still have positions available for the 2010 season for those interested in playing rugby this year.

The under-15s performed exceptionally well, defeating Casino in the grand final with the score being an impressive 40-5.

This was sweet revenge for the Brian Hyatt-coached squad after losing to Casino in the second match of the day by a conversion.

This was the wakeup call the boys needed.

The pre-season fitness training conducted by Brian Hyatt, Phil Nelson and Bronwyn McCabe over the past five weeks paid dividends with the Redmen boys’ superior fitness being the telling factor over a lacklustre Casino, who had no answers for the running rugby of the visitors.

After the impressive performances of both grades, the Grafton Junior Redmen are sure to be very competitive in the 2010 season.

Come along on a Friday night to support the squads and keep watching how our juniors go throughout the season.

Grafton Junior Rugby Union are looking for players for their under-13s team which plays in the Far North Coast Competition, as well as numbers for the under-7s through to 12s for the local competition played in Grafton every Friday afternoon at Rugby Park, South Grafton.

For anyone interested in those ages contact Peter Tonkin on 0423 956 550 for more information.
