Painting WiFi in the streets

NORWEGIAN art students have painted the beautiful wireless landscape of their town with light as part of a design project.

Timo Arnall, Jørn Knutsen, and Einar Sneve Martinussen of the Oslo School of Architecture and Design began the project to better understand how WiFi networks affect "how both products and cities are experienced."

The effect is a lightscape of the hidden WiFi world that broadcasts around us everyday.

The video shows the team using a large rod fitted with a wireless receiver and lights to gauge the strength of wireless signals in various parts of the city.

The rod, inspired by the surveying poles used in design and construction, was photographed being moved across open areas of the city with a long exposure to draw a 4 metre tall graph of light, with more lights indicating stronger signals.

On the project's site, Martinussen praised the exposure their display had received internationally.

"It has been very exciting to see how our film ... has being linked to and discussed across a broad range of audiences, disciplines and fields of research, including urbanism, technology, architecture, advertising and art."
