Maclean splashes out with pool party for 50th anniversary

THERE'S a lot to celebrate when Maclean Pool turns the 50 on Sunday.

Contractor for 37 of those years John Clarke said there were two celebrations in one.

"We're celebrating the opening of the original 33-metre, six-lane pool 50 years ago and the 50-metre pool on November 6, 1982," Mr Clarke said.

The community pulled out all the stops to get their swimming pool.

"In 1960 or '61 my mother-in-law played in a ladies' football match to raise money for the 33m pool," said Mr Clarke.

When Maclean came up with more than $200,000 for the upgrade to a full Olympic pool in 1982, they got a pool regarded as the most up-to-date in Australia at the time.

"For years we had all the school and zone carnivals here, which was a really big thing for the town," Mr Clarke said.

On Sunday Mr Clarke and his helpers are putting on a morning tea, which he hopes will attract about 100 people keen to relive old memories and good times.
