A life-long passion for music

Ash Grunwald

AFTER we finish the interview, Ash Grunwald might go for a surf or get ready for the last leg of his Trouble's Door tour before Pete Murray comes by to hang out and chat about music.

It's all in a day's work for the musician who blends blues with some electronica and dubstep.

Ash, like many other musos, followed his passion for music and his desire not to slog away at a 9-to-5 job.

It's paid off with multiple albums and a lifestyle of his choosing.

"All I was trying to do was to be a professional musician, that was it," Ash said.

"I just didn't want to work a day job… I achieved that…playing in restaurants and pubs, you know, just scrounging a living in a way.

"I think if I had to do it that same way again... I would probably struggle.

"Because, it was a lot of hard work. But at the time I was just stoked, I didn't care. I loved it."

Ash, 36, rubs shoulders with some of Australia's best in music at New South Wales' artists' hub, Byron Bay.

His Longtime video clip features Pete Murray, Xavier Rudd, Fingers Malone and Scott Owen from The Living End to name a few.

"It's really just calling in favours from my buddies for that clip," Ash said.

Ash, who's married and has a daughter, Sunny, has been in the game for just over 10 years.

He's not as well known as Pete Murray, but once you hear his music, you wonder how you haven't heard of him.

"I don't know if I took the slow way, but at least it's very genuine," he said.

"It doesn't rely on hefty media support or a big record company.

"Cos you know, I've got my fans one by one, signing the front cover of their CDs and stuff like that."

Ash's Gladstone show will be supported by The Fingers Malone Ensemble, aka Vinnie Laduce, a music producer who's originally from here.

"I'll be playing a few songs off the new album, it's usually pretty party style," Ash said.

"It's been an amazing tour."

After Gladstone, there are two more stops and then Ash and Vinnie are off to Indonesia for a surfing trip.

Such is the life of a muso.
