A second chance for Woopi the turtle

FOUND on the brink of death, Woopi the green sea turtle was released back into the ocean surrounded by the humans who found and cared for him.

It's a fitting story as the bright community members of Woolgoolga, who meet in the early hours of Friday morning to talk about mental health and aim to save lives, have aided in the saving of the turtle.

Woopi was found on Woolgoolga Main Beach by the Fluro Friday crew in November last year.

His whole body and shell was covered in thick, green algae, so much that he could barely lift his head and was assumed dead except for an occasional bubble of air blowing from his nostril.

"We were going to move it and give it a nice grave but a bubble of air kept coming out of its nostril and so we thought at least Dolphin Marine Magic could take him and put him down or something.

"They took him and saved his life," Lisa Nichols from Key Employment and Fluro Friday said.

"We always think Fluro Friday is about saving lives, but we've always thought it was about saving human lives and this is saving an animal's life but it's making all of us feel really good.

During his time in care at DMM, Woopi underwent ultrasounds, blood tests and received plenty of TLC.

"He was in one of the worst conditions that we have seen," DMM veterinarian Dr Duan March said.

"Reptiles do everything slowly, they get sick slowly and it takes them a long time to get better.

"Often the best treatment is just a warm, calm environment and time."
