Abandoned girl, 5, takes police to her dead mother

AN abandoned five-year-old girl has taken police to her home, where officers have discovered her mother's body.

The child was found at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York on Monday, apparently by her father who instructed her not to move.

Passengers noticed the small girl -- dressed in a star-spangled purple hoodie and pink tights -- and became concerned when noone came to collect her.

"She'd been sitting there for some time... The kid told the cops that her father had told her to wait there," one witness told the New York Post.
 

When police arrived, the young girl gave them enough information to find her home in Stamford, Connecticut -- about 90 minutes drive away.

Police found her 30-year-old Guatamalan mother dead, "with signs of a struggle" inside the apartment.

"We are trying to find out more about the family because they only moved to Stamford from New Jersey today or yesterday," Stamford police Captain Richard Conklin said on Monday.

The woman's death is being treated as a murder.
