Abbott claimed Slipper wedding expenses

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has admitted he billed taxpayers for the expense of attending Peter Slipper's August 2006 wedding.

Mr Abbott made the admission after a week of revelations about the travel claims made by members of the new government.

Attempts by the Daily to access details of the parliamentary expense claims of parliamentarians who attended the wedding, were rejected by the Department of Finance last week.

It said information was only available via a formal Freedom of Information application despite the publishing since 2009 of detail of all parliamentarian travel and expense claims.

Mr Abbott has acknowledged claiming $609.10 which he has paid back.

He made the admissions to journalists while attending the APEC conference in Bali.

"I remembered that some seven years ago, I had been to a couple of weddings and so I went back and I checked," Mr Abbott told Fairfax media.

"I was advised, because I sought advice on this, that the entitlement was unclear and so, in order to avoid doubt, I paid the relevant money back and, look, that's what people should do.

"They should act within entitlements, they should err on the side of caution and if there is any doubt, they should act immediately to clear the matter up. That's exactly what I have done."

Mr Slipper, who lost the seat of Fisher at the election standing as an independent, has weighed into the parliamentary expenses scandal, saying it was "breathtaking" other politicians were all

owed to pay back inappropriate entitlements while he faced court for his.

Mr Slipper, who could be jailed if found guilty of a taxpayer-funded tour of wineries using his government Cabcharge card, says he tried to repay about $1000 of expenses, but was not all owed to do so.
