DAILY Examiner chief photographer Adam Hourigan has picked up two of the major prizes in the 2012 APN Editorial Awards.

Adam took out the photographer of the year award for an outstanding body of work through the year and also won the best news video of the year for his comprehensive "Fix the Highway - No excuses" video.

The judges' comment was "this is a great example of a campaigning video. He interviewed about 100 locals to create a six-minute video which was sent to MPs as part of DEX's Pacific Hwy campaign. He also did a lovely Anzac Portraits package which used a montage of print photos with audio of interviews."

Of his photography award the judges said: "Adam shows a wonderful heartfelt connection to storytelling and his community, not to mention the depth of dedication to his job. His helicopter rescue story is an example of going the extra mile (lighting, location positioning, subject/prop direction), and making compelling stories come alive."

Former Daily Examiner designer Yohanna Dent's work in redesigning newspapers across the group resulted in her receiving an outstanding achievement award.
