Aiken-led Firebirds move to top of Trans-Tasman ladder

QUEENSLAND Firebirds' sharpshooter Romelda Aiken extended her lead at the top of the trans-Tasman Championship goal-scoring history charts to 39 goals in Sydney on Monday night.

The Jamaican, the leading goal-scorer in the history of the championship, scored 38 goals from 39 attempts as the unbeaten Firebirds beat the New South Wales Swifts 61-53 in the round-four clash.

The victory moved the Queenslanders, who have a bye this weekend, to the top of the 10-team ladder, and saw Aiken (pictured) increase her lead over veteran Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and Silver Ferns shooter Irene van Dyk.

Aiken's latest haul means she has now scored 181 goals in her four games this season. Her career-high season total is 569, set in 2009.

In the other game played on the night, the Canterbury Tactix needed two extra-time periods to overcome fellow strugglers Northern Mystics 80-78 in the all-Kiwi showdown in Christchurch.

England international Joanne Harten scored 63 goals, including 13 in the extra-time period, to help her side win for the first time this season, while the Mystics remain winless.
