Alpha mine opponents wait for Land Court decision

AND now they wait.

After weeks of evidence and submissions by landholders and environmental activists standing against GVK Hancock's proposed Alpha mine west of Rockhampton, all must now wait for the Land Court to make a decision.

Environmental advocates Coast and Country - represented by the Environmental Defenders' Office - are objecting to GVK's plans for an environmental authority and mining lease for the project.

Coast and Country wants the Alpha site to be considered responsible for the pollution caused by its future coal exports, even if they are burned in a foreign country.

The group is joined handful landholders with properties near the mine, and are trying to secure make-good agreements in an effort to ensure they are compensated if ever their underground water supplies are put at risk.
On Friday, the hearing was split between the Brisbane court and landholders appearing via video-link from Emerald.
All sides landed blows on the others throughout proceedings, but like a boxing match without a clear knockout, the parties must now wait to see who won the most points.
A spokesman for GVK Hancock said the company was confident it could prove to the Land Court that its Alpha mine deserved the granting of both its mining lease and environmental authority.
A decision from the Land Court of Queensland is expected within three months.
