American teen takes first gold of Games

AMERICAN teenager Ginny Thrasher claimed the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics, after she pulled off an upset in the women's 10-metre air rifle event.

Thrasher, 19, beat her more experienced Chinese competitors with two-time Olympic champion Du Li second and defending champion Yi Siling third.

The US collegiate national champion from West Virginia University only took up the sport five years ago after a deer hunting trip with her grandfather, father and two older brothers sparked her interest.

The Olympics are her first international competition.

Australian Jennifer Hens finished 31st of the 51-competitor field.
