Driver mounts footpath and takes out handrail
AN ELDERLY driver and pedestrians were lucky to escape injury as a four-wheel drive mounted the footpath in a busy shopping centre car park on the weekend.
Police said about 2pm on Saturday, a 69-year-old female driver from Highbury, in South Australia, accidentally accelerated onto the walkway just outside JB Hi-Fi on Boat Harbour Dr, Pialba.
The car forced its way up several steps and demolished a handrail before coming to a halt just metres short of the shopfront window.
Witnesses reported the driver was attempting to park when it is believed she may have mistaken the brake and accelerator.
Police, fire service and ambulance services were called to the scene, however no injuries were reported.
A crowd of people gathered to watch as a tow truck was used to dislodge the vehicle from the hand rail.
