Anglican op shop targeted by vandals again

FOR the second time in two months Anglican Op Shop volunteers are cleaning up after a senseless attack on their premises.

The Dean of Grafton, the Very Reverend Donald Kirk, said the attack occurred some time on Sunday night when people pulled open a bolted shut door with enough force to shatter the glass.

Once inside it appeared the perpetrators ransacked the building looking for cash, then trashed the kitchen.

"They pulled everything out of the fridges and spread it over the floor and benches," Fr Donald said.

"They sprayed barbecue and tomato sauce all over the walls and ceiling. It was an absolute mess.

"The volunteers, who gain nothing personally from this except feeling of helping the community, are back cleaning up again."

The temporary op shop set up in the Cathedral Hall was also ransacked, with cupboards emptied and clothes strewn around the floor.

Fr Donald said it appeared the offenders also broke into the burnt out book shop part of the building.

"It looks like they took out a windowand climbed into the building," he said.

On June 30 the Anglican dioceses Op Shop and Cathedral Book Shop premises were severely damaged by fire.

After an intensive clean up, op shop volunteers were able to set up a temporary premises in Edwards Hall, which is next to the op shop building.

Fr Donald said the clean up of the original building was just about complete.

"The builders should be in here soon after that," he said.

"We're still hoping we can have the shop back operating before Christmas."

Fr Donald said police have taken forensic samples from the building.
