Australian surfer holds on to medal chance in Costa Rica

SURFING: ANGOURIE surfer Jeames Young has helped keep Australia's chances of a World Surfing Games medal alive by carving a path through the repechage rounds at Playa Jaco.

Young started day three of the open men's competition with a convincing win in his first round repechage heat, posting scores of 6.5 and 6.8 for a total of 13.30.

He backed it up yesterday with second place in one of the lowest scoring heats of round two, scraping through to the impending third round where he will come up against Australian team mate Dale Lovelock.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre said the repechage rounds were never easy, and the competition tended to be fierce and heated.

"While the Repechage Rounds are difficult, they are not impossible," he said.

"We have seen many of our gold medallists get off to slow starts only to find their groove in the Repechage Round and go on to be World Champions.

The next few days of competition will be crucial as the field of competitors continues to narrow."

Surfline was predicting a south-west swell would fully materialise on Thursday, providing 3-4 foot waves for the remainder of the contest period.
