Angourie surfer picked to represent at nationals surfing

ANGOURIE surfer Chris Zaffis has won a place in the NSW team to contest the Australian Surfing Festival in Coffs Harbour later this year.

Zaffis, a semi-finalist in the 2015 NRMA NSW Open State Titles which wound up at Cabarita Beach on Sunday, finished fifth overall, which was good enough for him to gain selection.

Zaffis said the one foot surf for the State finals made it difficult for him.

"It certainly didn't help the bigger surfers (he is 185cm) and it's not what I would choose," he said. "I'm definitely a bigger wave surfer.

"The conditions were the same for everyone, but I do think those sorts of conditions tend to favour the person who is lucky to get the best ride, rather than the best surfer."

Zaffis is looking forward to his first open national titles after surfing at international and national levels as a junior.

"It's going to be similar but different," he said. "The guys are older and bigger and more competitive."

He is hoping Coffs Harbour turns on better conditions.

"If the swell is good it can be fun," he said. "There can be a cool beach break with some nice peaky wedges."
