ANZ spends big on apps and branches

ANZ Banking Group will spend up to $1.5 billion on new mobile banking apps and upgrades of its branches as it looks to attract more customers.

Under a five-year plan it has called Banking On Australia, ANZ will refurbish its branches, install video-conference facilities in regional branches and launch new mobile applications for consumers and businesses.

"The Banking on Australia program is about investing in our business to make it easier for more Australians to bank with ANZ, while also simplifying the way we do business," ANZ Australia chief executive Philip Chronican said in a statement.

Up to $1.5 billion of existing funds set aside for investment in the bank's business will be spent on the program.
