$22 million betting spree on July Carnival

PUNTERS launched a $22 million-plus betting spree during this year's July Racing Carnival at Grafton.
Overall approximate tote turnover during the five days racing was just under $10 million and bookmaker turnover, upwards of $11.5 million.
The break down of figures were:
nWestlawn Finance Grafton Cup Prelude Day (July 6) - Tote, $1.2 million, bookmakers, $1.7 million.
nSouth Grafton Cup Day (July 9) - Tote, $1.35 million, bookmakers, $3 million.
nRamornie Day (July 12) - Tote, $2.4 million, bookmakers, $3.8 million.
nGrafton Cup Day (July 13) - Tote, $3.1 million, bookmakers, $2.9 million.
nMaclean Cup Day (July 16) - Tote, 1.58 million, bookmakers, $90,000.
Ramornie Day was particularly strong with bookmakers, one bookie holding in excess of $2.2 million, mainly through phone betting clients.
Crowd figures for each respective day were: 3,258, 4,774, 6,868, 12,943 and 1,214.
Clarence River Jockey Club president Bob Pavitt said yesterday it had been a marvelous carnival.
"Maclean Cup Day has been a great finale to a successful carnival," he said.
"I'd like to personally thank our CEO Dale Thompson and all our hard-working staff for their efforts.
"To the sponsors we thank you all again. This carnival couldn't take place without the generous support of all our sponsors.
"And I'd especially like to thank the general public, trainers, jockeys and owners for supporting us and helping make this a carnival to remember."
