$92mil contract awarded

AN Australian construction company has been awarded the $92million tender to complete the final stage of the Shannon Creek dam.

Leighton Contractors will start preliminary work next month, leading to the upgrading of Geregarow Road and Shannondale Road which will allow access to the 30,000 me- galitre Shannon Creek Storage facility.

Clarence Valley Council mayor Ian Tiley congratulated Leighton Contractors on winning the tender.

"This major project will deliver a long-awaited, safe, secure water supply to the people of the Clarence and Coffs Harbour districts," he said. "The economic benefits will be a welcome addition to the local community."

Local landowner Peter Ellis also welcomed the news.

"We need the security the water supply scheme will give us in dry times, with the added benefit of protecting the low flows in the Nymboida River."
