A far cry from Athens

GRAFTON-born hockey star Brent Livermore reckons as a model, he makes a pretty good hockey player.

Livermore, who captained the Kookaburras to an historic first Olympic gold medal last year in Athens, features as Mr July in a sassy calendar launched by Hockey Australia in a bid to raise the profile of the sport.

While he enjoyed the photographic shoot, Livermore said he intended to pursue a career in property development rather than modelling when his playing days were over.

"Fashion and modelling provide another avenue of opportunity for athletes; it was a fun day with the guys but isn't something I've done before," he said. "The calender is something we are using to promote ourselves and to get some coverage for the team, but it's also to bring awareness to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next year."

The Commonwealth Games will be an exciting time for Livemore on and off the field, with his wife due to give birth to their second child around the same time.

The 29-year-old said his sights were firmly set on representing Australia at Olympic level for the third time at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Livermore is currently playing for Wellington in the New Zealand competition.

To purchase a calender from Hockey Australia call (03) 9555 1500 or email ha@hockey.org.au. They cost $20 plus $1.70 postage and handling.
