A funeral ?fit for a King

IT was a funeral fit for a King ? by name and by nature.

Ben King proved he was Byron Bay royalty on Tuesday when the town came to a halt to bid him farewell.

About 1500 people filled and surrounded St Finbarr's Catholic Church as Father Rex Hackett, the priest who married Ben and his wife Jenny, led the largest funeral held in Byron Bay in the living memory of locals.

The gathering wept as the service began with a song Ben voiced and recorded for Jenny's 40th birthday that ended with the words 'I can't wait to share the rest of our lives together.'

However, there were lighter moments as friends and family shared stories about his life.

His sister Marilyn King said Ben would have been ecstatic to see the crowd.

"No matter how happy you were to see him he was always 10 times more excited to see you," she said.
