IN terms of results it was a forgettable season for the Grafton Vikings basketball team but one shining light arose ? Matt Moran.

Moran was afforded the honour of being named in the five-man All Star team announced at the end of the 16-strong State Basketball Division One competition.

The 22-year-old guard joined the likes of former Viking players Stewart Tait and Tim Kavarcovich earning recognition as one of the top five players in the league.

And all this playing for a team that won only one game during the season proper.

"It was not only great for me but great for the team," the former Grafton High School student said graciously.

"And especially coming from a team that finished just about last.

"While the award was for me it reflects pretty much on the whole team. I couldn't have done it without them."

True to Moran's feelings, being selected by a panel of judges for the All Stars did wonders for his Viking teammates.

"Yeah, they (the team) were all ecstatic we actually got something out of the season," Moran said.

Standing 186cm, Moran previously played with Tait and Kavarcovich.

He started playing basketball a decade back and has been with the Vikings for the past six years.

"This year wasn't good for us (Vikings) but we're a young team rebuilding," Moran said. "Everyone still put in 100 per cent, especially the young fellas who put in everything you could have asked for.

"I just hope we can all stay together for next season. We should definitely improve with experience."

Moran has played representative basketball for the Northern NSW team and while basketball remains his major sport and passion, he has also tried his hand at indoor cricket, indoor netball and volleyball.
