Alleged sex offender fronts local court

THE clenching and reclenching of his left hand while jiggling his left leg belied the impassive face of David Gordon Congdon as he sat in the dock of the Grafton Local Court yesterday awaiting his fate.
Wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt underneath a black bomber jacket, Congdon -? with his creased face, grey goatee beard and balding head -? looked every day of his 53 years.
His case, which began when he was first charged three-and-a-half years ago, took its first steps to a conclusion yesterday when he faced Magistrate Schnelle in Grafton's main court room.
Congdon is charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault on a victim under 16 years, 10 counts of aggravated indecent assault on a victim under 16 years and one count of failing to appear in court.
The charges arose out of incidents alleged to have occurred at Evans Head in 1998 and Whiporie in 2000.
Congdon was charged in 2002, but his failure to appear at a committal hearing in Grafton in December of that year resulted in a warrant being issued for his arrest.
It was not executed until Monday, when Congdon was picked up by Queensland Police at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast, where he had been living. According to court documents, he admitted he had been avoiding police.
Yesterday he made no application for bail and was not required to enter a plea.
He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in Grafton court on August 14.
