Brazen theft mows down club?s dream
By EMMA CORNFORD
FOR the past six years, members of the Grafton Radio Aero Sport Society have been fundraising to bring their paddock up to the strict conditions required for competition.
But last week, all their years of hard work came undone when someone stole a part of the group's mower worth $5000.
Society treasurer Michael Hennessy and his wife, president of the club Wendy Hennessy, are devastated.
"It's like ripping the guts out of the club because we don't have a lot," Mr Hennessy said.
"To replace it so we can keep the paddock up to scratch would cost us $5000 but we just don't have that kind of money."
The deck of the mower is described as a large, yellow block with a three-blade system underneath and small silver wheels on the front. It was stolen between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning of last week from the group's shed at Watters Road in South Grafton.
"The landowners remember seeing that it had been moved out near the gate on Tuesday afternoon, because it was in the shed that morning," Mr Hennessy said.
"And it's private property so whoever's taken it has had to come into the paddock to do it. The deck fills up a 7 x 4 trailer, so it's not like it's a small thing. They would have had to have been prepared."
Mrs Hennessy said the theft had 'stumped' her.
"The people of Grafton have been wonderful in helping us with our fundraising over many years, (so) the loss of this is very hard to take. My faith in people is really being lost," she said.
Mr Hennessy added: Even if someone's seen it somewhere and let police know ? that would help.
