BRAZEN THIEVES RAID HOME

By DAVID BANCROFT

THE Christmas spirit for one young Grafton family has been spoiled after brazen thieves broke into their home, stole Christmas presents and their car.

Now the couple wants to spread the message that people need to be extremely cautious and lock their homes, including their windows, before they asleep.

The couple, who asked to be identified simply as Matthew and Mandy to avoid possible targetting by the thieves, say it could happen to anyone. According to Matthew, a window in their home had been left open only a couple of centimetres, and the thieves used the opening to remove the window completely from its frame before getting in the house. Once inside they stole the presents from under the Christmas tree, one wallet and the contents of another, a digital camera, and cash. Then they left in a 1983 Toyota Corolla, which was later found burnt out at Tamworth.

Matthew said he was surprised by the front the thieves had shown.

One of the items stolen was a mobile phone, taken from a charger sitting on a bedside table near where the couple was sleeping.

"They must have real guts to walk up beside someone sleeping and take stuff from beside the bed," Matthew said.
