Brooms beauty?s shot at the big time

A BROOMS Head beauty could be the next Jennifer Hawkins after making the finals for Miss Australia.

Joelle Gabriel, 19, studies radiation therapy at Newcastle University and is one of four girls from New South Wales selected as finalists in the Miss Universe Australia beauty pageant. Four girls from each state were chosen.

She said she only entered the competition on Friday when her boyfriend spotted an article in a newspaper. She attended the casting at Newcastle Town Hall this week and was selected on Tuesday.

"I was just about to go to uni ... I couldn't believe it, I was so happy ... I didn't think I had a chance to go there (Darwin)," Joelle said.

Joelle will fly to Darwin on Easter Sunday for a week of photo shoots before the competition on April 1, where Miss Universe Australia will be selected. From there it's on to Bangkok, Thailand, in May for the Miss Universe beauty pageant where the winner will join the ranks of Australia's own 2004 Miss Universe winner, Jennifer Hawkins.

Joelle expects to gain 'heaps of experience' from the pageant.

No stranger to competitions, Joelle was a finalist in the 'Face of Dove' contest last year.

"I do it casually (modelling) to earn money while I go through uni," she said.
