Burning down the highway

IT was a pitstop that Victorians Matthew Braithwaite and Clint Karl never meant to make.

The pair were on their way to Mooloolaba on Queensland's Sunshine Coast yesterday afternoon when their car caught fire on the Gwydir Highway.

"We were just driving along and there was a whole lot of smoke coming out the back," Mr Karl said.

"A bloke told us to pull over because the car was on fire. We heard a big bang and then there were all these flames."

With the car full of their belongings, the men salvaged what they could before the car was engulfed in flames.

They were uninjured but will now take a bit longer to make it to the sunshine state.
