Cansdell climbs in world rankings

MULLAWAY surfer Shaun Cansdell continued his climb up the world rankings with a close second in the US$140,000 Billabong Tahara Pro in Japan.
The star goofy footer was narrowly beaten in a tense final by Brazilian Danilo Costa in the six-star WQS event held in clean one-metre waves. Cansdell beat another Brazilian Marcelo Trekinho in the semi-final while Costa beat Australian Chris Davidson to make his way to the final. Cansdell has been in great form this season and his latest performance lifted him to fifth ? adjusted to best seven results ? on the WQS rankings headed by last year's World Junior Pro Champion, Adriano de Souza, from Brazil.
Sponsored by Australian-based international surf wear company Billabong, 20-year-old Cansdell also moved a step closer to qualifying for next year's top tier, WCT circuit against the likes of surfing legend Kelly Slater and three-times world champion Andy Irons.
This year Cansdell, runner-up to de Souza in the World Junior Pro Championships, has already earned a spot in a WQS event, the Billabong Pro in Teahupoo. The WQS tour now moves onto France for the three important contests ? the US$100,000 five-star O'Neill Pro at Anglet, US$125,000 six-star Sooruz Lacanau Pro, US$150,000 Rip Curl Super Series at Hossegor and US$125,000 six-star Billabong Pro in Portugal.
