Cansdell looks to 2007 poll

CLARENCE MP Steve Cansdell will contest his seat at the next state election in March 2007.

Pre-selection for Nationals seats closed on Friday, with Mr Cansdell the only nominee for the Clarence electorate.

"In a month's time, we will have a pre-selection meeting where I'll be automatically endorsed," he said.

Mr Cansdell said people needed to be a National Party member for at least six months and nominate before the close of business Friday to be considered.

Mr Cansdell said the Clarence electorate would be redrawn for the 2007 election, increasing the electorate by 4000 voters.

"We lose Arrawarra, Mullaway and Nana Glen to Coffs Harbour and we lose Wardell to Ballina," he said.

"Tabulam, Mallanganee, Mumulgum (we lose) to Lismore and we gain Casino," he said.

Meanwhile, Coffs Harbour Mayor Keith Rhoades will contest the seat of Coffs Harbour as an Independent in a move designed to loosen sitting member Andrew Fraser's grip on the seat. Mr Fraser has held the seat since 1990, but Mr Rhoades said he was confident he could push the Nationals MP all the way.

"I am offering a fresh, new approach to the residents of the electorate," he said.

"When the Coalition was in power we were seen as a safe seat and received no attention and the Labor Government see the seat as not winnable and rejects it as well.

"It's a proven fact, government's pay more attention to marginal seats than safe seats," he said.
