Castle new cane boss

VINCE Castle will hope his term as president of the NSW Canegrowers Association is as sweet as some of the news the industry is now receiving.

Mr Castle, a former association vice-president, was elected unopposed as president at the association's last meeting.

For the past few years the sugar industry has battled poor prices and corrupt international markets. But a rise in international prices from a low of about 5.6 US cents a pound about 12 months ago to 15.80 US cents a pound this week, means prospects for the local industry have improved markedly.

Mr Castle said he did not expect to steer a different course for the association during his term as president.

"Most of the association's policies seem to be working well," he said.

He described himself and others on the association as 'in- dustry players'.
