Centre solution

THE fate of the Wherrett Park Squash and Sports Centre might be sealed but the Clarence Valley Council still hopes to keep it open for as long as possible.

Yesterday Mayor Ian Tiley said council would be keen to talk to anyone interested in leasing the sports centre providing the Mareeba Nursing Home, which has offered to buy the centre, agreed to the deal.

With the nursing home waiting for an accreditation to allow it to create 40 new beds, no date has been fixed for the centre's demolition. Centre owner Ross McPherson has already signalled his intention to retire and dismissed any chance of leasing the centre.
