Charitable grudge match
By LEIGH PRITCHARD
ANGIE Garland will go to war on the bowling greens tomorrow wearing green and red.
The Grafton Base Hospital (GBH) maternity unit manager will be part of more than 40 teams taking part in the 32nd annual Lions Club Bowls Day at the Grafton City Services Bowling and Sporting Club from 9am to 11am.
Mrs Garland said her team, Tinsel, would dress in a Christmas theme. It will be a 'grudge match' against her husband Stuart's team, Slippery When Wet, from Communi- ty Health.
"I have never bowled, but it will be good for a laugh," Mrs Garland said. "It is all in the spirit of fun."
Organiser Bernie Barron said the Grafton Lion's Club aimed to raise $50,000 for the GBH Maternity and Women's Care Unit.
"The grounds are packed out," Mr Barron said. He said the money would go towards a much-needed isolette machine with humidifier and a birthing bed.
Mrs Garland said the maternity ward has needed a new birthing bed for more than three years.
"It is just fantastic to get this support," she said. "We used to have four (humidifiers) and over a period of time we are down to one."
There will be a free breakfast from 8am and an auction, by John Pankhurst, will be held at 11am.
