Classic return

By JENNIFER HUXLEY

THE Clarence Valley's boardriding community is eagerly awaiting tonight's announcement of the winners in the various divisions of the 2005 Yamba Bowling Club Pippie Beach Surf Classic.

The competition, returning after a respite in 2004, was received with enthusiasm at the weekend, with 83 entrants competing in a total of 54 heats across the weekend.

Boardriders enjoyed suitable conditions with offshore winds and two to three-foot swell.

Angourie Boardriders Club treasurer Paul Curtis said the 18th Pippie Beach Surf Classic was all that competitors had come to expect, adding there would be a few surprises at tonight's presentations.

"The weekend went really well, we saw some great surfing in some great conditions," Curtis said.

"I can't say too much until the winners have been announced on Monday night, but let's just say that I think there will be a few pleasant surprises."

By popular demand this year's competition marked the introduction of a new surfing event ? an air show.

This involved competitors being judged solely on the performance of aerial manoeuvres.

While the Pippie Beach Surf Classic was not as big as past events, Curtis said the competition went 'extremely well', with many pitching in to help with the running of the contest.

The presentation dinner will take place tonight at the Yamba Bowling Club. Doors open at 6.30pm and local act 'Cameltoe' are set to play after the formalities.
