Devils? halfback too hot for Ghosts

HALFBACK Brenton Cochrane scored four tries as Byron Bay won their first game of the season 51-24 over the Grafton Ghosts at Red Devil Park, Byron Bay.

Cochrane was outstanding for the Red Devils as his silky smooth skills shone.

Hooker Brad Lees, fullback Duane Cahill, prop Lincoln Raudonikis, lock Matt Slattery and winger Nick Boredin all stood tall, but coach Arthur Sauverain was keen to emphasise how the Bay played. Not only was it Byron's first first grade victory of the year, but it was also the first time the club had won three grades for three seasons.

Grafton led 18-10 at half-time, but aided by a blustery wind and spurred on by the thought of their first victory, Byron Bay steadied to control possession and territory in the second-half to run in 41 points to 4.

BYRON BAY 51 (Duane Cahill 3, Simon Fathers, Brenton Cochrane 4, Lincoln Raudonikis tries; Chris King 7 goals, Brenton Cochrane field-goal) d GRAFTON GHOSTS 22 (Phil Warby, Don Dickson, Jason Vidler 2 tries; Chris Adamson 3 goals).

Reserve grade: BYRON BAY 34 (Noel King 2, Dean Phelps, Bruce Campbell, Charles King 2 tries; Charles King 4, Reece Purcell goals) d GRAFTON GHOSTS 14 (Jon Carney, Darren Herin, Chad Cassidy tries; Joel Pearce goal).

Under-18s: BYRON BAY 26 (Mick Chapman, Peter Cottle, Tom O'Connor, Reece Purcell, Kyle Pearson tries; Reece Purcell 3 goals) d GRAFTON GHOSTS (Josh Salkeld try; Josh Barber goal).
