Don?t jump to conclusions over rates: GM

CLARENCE Valley ratepayers should look at the total rates charges to get a proper picture of how proposed rates changes would affect them, according to Clarence Valley Council acting general manager Ken Boyle.

Mr Boyle said examining the proposed general rate increase alone gave a distorted view of the total rate bill.

"This is without doubt the most important issue for ratepayers when considering the total cost of services provided by their council," he said.

"The introduction of a common water, sewer and domestic waste charge is a significant issue and a necessary change to bring about a fair and equitable rating structure.

"Rating structures are a complex issue. However the community must inform themselves of the likely impacts.

"The people of Wooli for example are saving $200 on water charges, the residents of Junction Hill are saving $148 on sewer charges. There will, of course, be savings on water charges depending on individual consumption."

Mr Boyle encouraged ratepayers to review the draft management plan and attend community meetings scheduled for next week so they were fully aware of the proposed rate structure and impact on individu- al properties.
