Fire guts house

Australia Day was ruined for a Grafton couple when their Coaldale Road house caught fire and was destroyed.

Grafton firemen and NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers arrived at 1pm to find the house well alight.

Firemen fought the blaze aware that the property contained gas cylinders.

The owners, who were outside the house when the blaze started, were unhurt. It is believed they had moved into the house as recently as three weeks ago. The cause of the fire is unknown.

It has been a busy 24 hours for Grafton firemen. At 2am yesterday they attempted to put out a fire in a car near the Grafton Hotel in Fitzroy Street.

Police are investigating the cause. It is believed someone tried to break into the car, failed and set it alight.

Firemen at one stage feared the flames from the car would set the hotel alight.
