Freak runout tips game for premiers
By TONY WHITE
A freakish incident that saw Brothers Post Office Hotel's John Holmes run out changed the fortunes of the match against Westlawn Grafton Hotel at Ellem Oval on Saturday.
Holmes and star youngster Matt Ryan had consolidated Brothers position after the early loss of openers Trevor White (1) and Sam Jackson (11) with 21 runs on the board.
However, a freakish bit of fielding by Nathan Blanch ended Holmes innings in the Bananacoast Community Credit Union fixture.
The young tearaway bowled to Ryan with Ryan hitting the ball straight back at the bowler. Blanch, who plays soccer in the off sea- son, deflected the ball with his foot back onto the stumps to find Holmes out of his crease and adjudged out.
After the dismissal, Ryan continued to take the Wes- tlawn attack smashing runs to all parts of Ellem Oval.
Ryan's innings came to an end after a fine low catch by Rohan Hackett at square leg off Blanch's bowling. Ryan scored 73 and has be- gun the season in dashing form.
After Ryan's dismissal the remaining Brothers batsman were contained by some very tight bowling, particu- larly by Blanch who finished with 5-64 off 20.1 overs.
Andrew Firth took 2-19 from 12 overs including six maidens forcing plenty of pressure on the Brothers batsman.
Brothers were dismissed for 155 and Westlawn faced nine overs before the close of play.
They will resume next week at 1-27 with Daniel Amos (11) and veteran Rob McCredie (4) the not out batsman.
First grade debutant BJ Purser was out lbw to Holmes for 1.
