Golf, bowl and be merry

OUR local boys in blue are going to strip down, don fancy dress and call on their inner Grant Kenny strength to compete in Grafton's annual police ironman event.

The popular fundraiser, in which teams of three complete nine holes of golf and a game of bowls, is expected to raise almost $20,000 ... and an eyebrow or two.

Organisers are hoping the eighth annual ironman challenge will push their total fundraising efforts past the $100,000 mark.

All funds will go towards the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.

Police and Westpac Helicopter representatives gathered at the Grafton Base Hospital helipad yesterday to launch the event, scheduled for May 25.

Artist Graham Payne was also on hand to unveil a signed Footy Show caricature featuring Fatty Vautin, Peter Sterling, Paul Harragon and Matt Johns. Mr Payne has donated the caricature to be auctioned on the day.

Grafton sergeant Chris Tuite said the event was well supported.

"Fancy dress is encouraged ... and the ironman component of the day is that you can swing a golf club, as well as bowl, whilst indulging in a refreshment," he said.
