MACLEAN golf star Luke Henwood has finished equal fifth in the Queensland Amateur Championships at Redcliffe .

The 20-year-old was beaten 1-up by eventual runner-up, Nathan Roberts (Indooroopilly) in a nail biting quarter final of the match play section.

Indooroopilly's Aaron Pike was the eventual winner.

Henwood was 3-up with four holes to play against Roberts but wilted over final stages.

"I blew it," Henwood admitted. "I just didn't hit good shots on the tough finishing holes. Nathan finished birdie, par, birdie, par, par to beat me. I honestly believe I could have won the whole thing if I got through that match."

Henwood went into the match play series after qualifying 23rd for the 32-man final.

Woolgoolga's Logan Toms, who qualified 8th, was beaten in his opening match by Pike, the No 25 qualifier.

Coffs Harbour golfer Jason Barby (No 9) won his opening match against Bobby Smith then was beaten by Pike in the next round.
