Henwood prevails in Herron Cup thriller


MACLEAN golf star Luke Henwood pipped Grafton's Grant Rickwood in a play-off for the Herron Cup at the Grafton District Golf Club last weekend.

Both players finished with a 36hole gross of 142.

Henwood, a NSW colts representative shot consecutive rounds of 71.

Rickwood, who has finished runner-up on several occasions, and Henwood headed off late on Sunday for the play-off, finishing in near darkness.

The pair both birdied the first, parred the eighth before Henwood took the title with a par on the ninth compared to Rickwood's bogey six.

"It was a terrific play-off, great to be involved in," Henwood, 21, said.

"It was neck and neck all the way. We couldn't even see our balls coming up the ninth, it was that dark."

It was Henwood's first win in the prestigious Herron Cup.

"Gee, there are some great past winners on the cup," he said.

"I was very happy to win it, great.

"I didn't really play that well, but my chipping and putting saved me.

"The course was in great condition, despite playing in pouring rain on Saturday. It was a great tournament."

Coffs Harbour player Corey Williams won the nett title on a countback with 133, John McDonald (171), the Div 2 gross and Rickwood (134), nett other Div winner.

Rickwood and David Green had eagles on Saturday and Henwood and D Watson eagles on Sunday.
