Hockey talent on parade down south

DURING the latest school holidays a number of junior boys and girls attended hockey talent and development camps at Bathurst, Tamworth, Goulburn and the Illawarra.

Talented players are nominated by their local associations for these four day camps where they are placed into teams with kids from all over NSW.

Intensive skill development, assessment and match play are undertaken with the week culminating in the selection of NSW Country teams to play in the annual City-Country clash.

The Under-13s boys did well with three players gaining their coaches player of the team award ? Patrick Crompton, James Callaghan and Anthony Cowan.

Seven out of the nine boys who went from Grafton were selected out of the 150 to play in the two selection games.

Zac Gallaher was also picked to umpire one of these games.

The highlight was Anthony Cowan who kept brilliantly to deservedly gain selection in the NSW Country team.

In the Under-14s boys Quentin Pursey was a standout amongst some very talented players and retained his position after his selection in the 2004 NSW Country and NSW Under-13s team.

In the Under-18s Nick Russ and Scott Garner went down to Sydney to trial and both were selected in the NSW Country team.
