Inland option canned
PLANS for an inland highway along the Summerland Way, with a new road to Ewingsdale from Casino, have been scrapped by the Roads and Traffic Authority.
In the long-awaited report on the route option, suggested by local Nationals MPs Don Page, Thomas George and Steve Cansdell, the RTA says the Summerland Way option would cost up to $3.2billion; near- ly twice the figure guessed at by its advocates.
The inland route would divert only 1900 of the 9700 vehicles a day that use the existing coastal highway and would require up to three kilometres of tunnels.
Mr Page said he wanted to see detailed costings for the option and saying traffic figures did not reflect projected increases in the volume of truck traffic on the highway.
